I will have great difficulty putting on paper what Miss Earlynne has meant to me. An ever present light in my neighborhood, church and school.
She always welcomed a “drop in” visit at her home for children looking for a yummy snack. And what a wonderful cook she was! I loved her ham loaf, spaghetti and all the bread! She shared summer vegetables from her garden and the blueberries from her back yard. Quick to bring a meal during sickness or times of grief, she lived generously.
She or my mother taught every Sunday school class I was ever in - she handled the older grades and directed the “assembly” of Sunday school classes before going to our regular classes. She was responsible for getting a Youth Hymnal with more contemporary music and hymns for us middle schoolers. I remember learning so many sweet hymns out of that book, which I have in my hymnal collection. She orchestrated many if not all Christmas plays. Oh my, those preschoolers with angel wings made of coat hangers, tissue paper and glitter! The Wise Men, the shepherds in their father’s bathrobes, and a doll for baby Jesus - what sweet memories. And I mustn’t fail to mention the years of Bible School gathering on the front steps of the church each morning and following the the flags and Bible in procession and opening the day with the pledges to the American flag, the Christian flag and the Bible. Always led by her. Miss Earlynne lived out her faith in her community such a winsome way that I am sure I am not the only one whom she influenced to follow Christ. She loved well and lived well. I will never forget her and the things she taught me.
