Mrs. Gaynell Powell

Gaynell Dilbeck Powell, 92, longtime owner of Scottsboro Flowers & Gifts, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on September 4, 2019 in Brentwood, TN. She was an active member of First Baptist Church for over 50 years and devoted much of her time serving the youth, missions and members of her Sunday School Class. She was an early member of the Three Arts Club of Scottsboro, The Alabama Federated Club and held offices in both. She was also a member of the Friends of the Library Club and the Music Study Club. Mrs. Powell’s true passions were flowers, art and music and she shared her talents in many ways in the Scottsboro community. She attended the University of Alabama and graduated from Bright’s School of Design in Chicago. She loved to travel and was an avid Alabama football fan. “GayGay”, as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren, was a devoted Mother and Grandmother and had a steadfast faith in God’s love for all people. Mrs. Powell is survived by her two sons, Benny Bell (Pam) in Nashville TN, and Dr. Wesley D. Powell in Atlanta, GA. Six grandchildren, Ford, Wesley, Worth, Drew and Sims Bell and Pearson Powell, her sister in law Bettye McGahey and nieces Janet and Jody McGahey. She is preceded in death by her husbands Binford Bell (Beto) and Nixon Wesley Powell, her parents The Reverend T.J. Dilbeck, a former Baptist minister and lecturer and Lennie Allen Dilbeck. The family will receive visitors at a luncheon from 1:00 – 3:00 pm on Friday, September 13 in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church 215 S Andrews St Scottsboro, Alabama with a graveside service to follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, with Rudder Funeral Home in charge, In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
