I had the distinct pleasure of working with Jesse during his tenure as a chaplain, mid- 1990's to mid-2000's, at Birmingham's Medical Center East (St. Vincent's East) where I served as Pastoral Services Director. I also had the opportunity to fellowship with him and Clara at multiple holiday suppers which we hosted for the chaplains and their spouses. I experienced Jesse as a man of substance, a man among men who brought a quiet, gentle, thoughtful presence and graciousness to all whom he came in contact with. He carried himself well and, as his fellow African Americans would say, always "looked good" - a well-dressed man of fine comportment whom I will miss dearly. It's high and beautiful people like Jesse who hold the world together for the rest of us. God bless and preserve the sacred memory, life, and living legacy of Jesse Lee Bynum - now and forevermore. You lived well, my dear friend. Your gifts and graces will be sorely missed. Steve Sweatt, Birmingham, AL
