Alfred M. L. Coles, 74 of Stevenson, AL died March 7, 2010 at Highlands Medical Center in Scottsboro, AL.
Alfred was the son of the late Herman Coles and Ossie Lee Rayford Coles Hutchins born February 19, 1936 in Stevenson, AL. In the early sixties, he worked as a steel worker, Chicago Transit Authority Bus Driver and School Bus Driver. Al served in the U.S. Army a short time due to health restrictions. He was a graduate of Carver High School. He loved to hunt and fish and could often be found casting a line at Mud Creek.
Alfred loved his family. His children and grandchildren were dear to him. At a Rayford Coles, Hutchins Family Reunion in Chicago in 1986, he shared his personal testamony at the church worship service.
He returned to Stevenson in 1996 to live a quiet life hunting, fishing and growing vegetables in his garden. Neighbors called him the "Gentleman Farmer".
Mr. Coles was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Cora Vaughn, Bettye Hardric and Ella Ashmore.
Al, a free spirit, generous and loving will be dearly missed by all who loved him. He leaves to cherish his memory his children: Edna Marie (Fred) Hudson of Montgomery, AL, Antonio Coles of Decatur, AL and Alfred Coles, Jr. of Chicago, IL; grandchildren: Kejia, Jessica and Chrystal; great-grandchildren: Corkezian and Yorkensha; sisters: Olla Wiles and Willie P. Sullivan both of Chattanooga, TN; brothers: Moses Hutchins of Buda, TX, Thomas (Bobbie) Hutchins of Clarksville, TN, Louis Hutchins of Lakewood, WA; brother-in-law George Ashmore of Montgomery, AL; special dedicated friend Mae Katherine Hutchins of Stevenson, AL; nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.
The funeral will be Thursday, March 11, at 1 PM CST at Rudder Funeral Home in Stevenson, AL officiated by Dr. T. Jordan. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral time. Interment will be at Stevenson Community Cemetery. www.rudderfuneralhomes
