Barbara Ann Matthews Payne, 84 of Bridgeport, AL, passed away in her home on June 23, 2014 surrounded by family and loved ones. Mrs. Payne is survived by her children: Aldonna (Wayne) Crabtree, DeAnn Day, Jean (Steve) Cooper, William D. "Bill" (Carol) Payne, Jr., and Delia Russell all of Bridgeport, AL; siblings: Betty Cloud of Clarksville, TN, Millard F. (Jenifer) Matthews, Jr. of Pineville, LA, Glenda (Bill Jack) Sanders of Scottsboro, AL, LaVonne (Bill) Haven of Pensacola, FL, and Richard Matthews of Stevenson, AL; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and special caregiver Joyce Estes. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years William D. Payne, Sr., daughter, Caroline Marie McPherson; parents Millard F. and Pearl Davis Matthews; brothers: James Phillip and Charles "Chuck" Matthews; brother-in-law Ted E. Cloud, Sr.; son-in-law Ralph L. Day; grandson Scott VanAllman. Mrs. Payne was educated in Fort Benning, GA at the Lanier Private School for Girls. After moving to Bridgeport, she graduated in the BHS Class of 1947. In Mr. and Mrs. Payne's later years, they worked side by side in their family-owned business, The Korner Food Market, in Bridgeport for 26 years. Mrs. Payne was affectionally known as "Mrs. D." Granny Payne enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to read, crochet, was an animal lover and received much companionship from her loving cats. She was also an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Granny Payne was a loving, honorary "Granny" to several children in Bridgeport. Mrs. Payne was a member of the Bridgeport Church of Christ. She was baptized in 1950. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bridgeport Church of Christ Food Pantry or the Bridgeport Public Library. Visitation will be Wednesday, 2-8 PM CDT at Rudder Funeral Home in Bridgeport, AL. The funeral service will be Thursday, June 26, at 2 PM CDT in the funeral home chapel officiated by Randy Smith and Millard Matthews, Jr. Interment will be in the Mt.
