Mr. Buford Hubert Matthews' Obituary
Mr. Buford Hubert Matthews, age 90, of Jacksonville, Alabama, formerly of Bridgeport, Alabama, passed away on Thursday, August 11th, 2022. He is survived by daughter Stephanie Matthews-Jewell and son-in law Derek Jewell; daughter Jo Michele Clayton and son in law Alan Clayton; granddaughter Jordan Melson (Josh) Allen; Alan Melson; great grandchildren Rylee Allen and Cade Matthew Allen; sister Mary Ruth (Carl) Knopp; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Patricia Tanner Matthews.
He lived a wonderful life surrounded by a loving family and his love for the Lord. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Bridgeport for 72 years and is currently a member of First United Methodist Church in Anniston. He served our country for 27 years in the US Army and National Guard and was the mayor of Bridgeport for 4 years. He was a member of the Bridgeport Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and had served as Worshipful Master. He fought in the Korean War earning numerous medals for his valor; but he would tell you his greatest memory was meeting Marilyn Monroe. He loved deep sea fishing with his buddies and even caught a 7ft. Bull shark on one of his trips. He was a diehard Alabama football fan and never missed a chance to yell Roll Tide. He has lived an exceptional life and touched many people with his sweet spirit. Pallbearers will be the Bridgeport Masonic Lodge and Honorary Pallbearers will be the Anniston First United Methodist Church Grove Sunday School Class. Services will be led by Reverend Kyle Bryan of Anniston First United Methodist Church and held at Rudder Funeral Home in Bridgeport on Saturday August 13, 2022 at 2:00 pm (Central Time). With full Military Honors to follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Shepherds Table of Anniston First United Methodist Church.
The family respectfully wants to publicly thank Grace Hospice of Fayetteville Georgia, Azalea Estates of Fayetteville Georgia and Legacy Village of Jacksonville for all the kindness and care given to Buford Matthews.
