Charles Lewis Payne, 91 of Bridgeport, AL, died December 21, 2012 at his home. Lewis was the son of the late John Oscar and Delia Murray Payne born August 2, 1921 in Bridgeport. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of WWII serving between 1943-1946 under General Patton at the Battle of the Bulge. He had owned Payne’s Grocery and had worked at Bridgeport Utilities. The State of Alabama recognized him by Resolution HJR137 for his long-term service on the Bridgeport City Council. He was appointed and/or elected nine times for a total of 38 years on the Bridgeport City Council. He was a member of Bridgeport Church of Christ, American Legion Post 62 in South Pittsburg, TN and the VFW in Stevenson, AL.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 43 years Clara Mae Tant Payne; son Charles Wayne Payne; siblings: William D. Payne and Kathryn Payne Smith.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years Charlsie Faye Matthews Payne; sons Bill (Fay) Payne of Bridgeport, AL, Gary (Mary Faye) Payne of South Pittsburg, TN; step-children: Paul David (Anita) Jones and William Edgar Jones both of Scottsboro, AL, Andy Ray (Carol) Jones of Jasper, TN, Rita Fay (Keith) Foster of Bridgeport, AL, Terry Lynn (Linda) Jones of Madison, AL; 14 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Saturday, 4-9 PM CT at Rudder Funeral Home in Bridgeport, AL. The funeral service will be Sunday, December 23, at 2 PM CT at the funeral home chapel officiated by Roger Comstock. Military Honors and Interment will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
