Carl David Loyd, 87 of Bridgeport, AL died June 20, 2010 at his home. Carl David was the son of the late John Roland and Lula Ann Williams Loyd, Sr. born March 21, 1923 in Bridgeport, AL. He is also preceded in death by his five brothers: John R. Loyd, Jr., F.M. "Marion" Loyd, L.W. "Lew" Loyd, Jack W. Loyd, and A.C. "Sandy" Loyd.
Mr. Loyd was a 1942 graduate of Bridgeport High School. He served in the United States Navy. David worked in the family business, J.R. Loyd and Sons. Later he purchased the Beulah Fudge Shop in South Pittsburg. He moved the business to its present location on Cedar Avenue and renamed it to Loyd's. He and his wife Virginia operated the ladies apparel shop until their retirement in the late 1980's.
David was a life-long member of the Bridgeport Church of Christ where he and Virginia served as treasurer for approximately 12 years.
The Bridgeport Depot Museum stands as a testimony of Mr. Loyd's love of history, preservation and restoration. Mr. Loyd, his brothers, Marion and Lew, along with a number of dedicated Bridgeport citizens formed BAHA (Bridgeport Area Historical Association). One of its first goals was to acquire the depot building from CSX. Once the acquisition was made, David worked diligently for many years on this monumental task. Mr. Loyd also served as BAHA's president for a number of years.
His other interests include gardening and collecting.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 40 years Mary Virginia Freeman Loyd; step-daughter and son-in-law Susan and Rodney Bell of Scottsboro, AL.
Visitation will be at Rudder Funeral Home in Bridgeport, AL on Monday from 5-7 PM CDT. The funeral will be Tuesday, June 22, at 11 AM CDT at the Bridgeport Church of Christ officiated by Bro. Roger Comstock and Bro. Danny Rader. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to funeral time. Interment will be at the Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens in Jasper, TN.
