David Webster Williams' Obituary
David Webster Williams, 78, of Bridgeport, Alabama passed away on Friday, September 9, 2022 at home surrounded by his family.
David was born September 12, 1943 in Guild, Tennessee. He was a 1961 graduate of Bridgeport High School, where he met his high school sweetheart, Wanda Rowland. They married on September 7, 1963. They have three children; Greg Williams, Susan (recently deceased David) Smith, and Patti (Walker) Morris. They have three grandchildren; Madison and Maci Morris; Heather (Russell) Mabe; three great grandchildren; Mattie, Miley, and Matthew Mabe.
David Williams was preceded in death by his parents Lowell and Rubye Williams and brothers Lowell “Junior” and Phil Williams.
David graduated from Northeast Alabama Community College with an Associates of Science degree. He took classes at Mars Hill Preaching School and Nashville Broadcasting School. He was also a member of the Alabama National Guard.
David “Dave” was a broadcaster for over 50 years. He worked at radio and television stations in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. He won many honors and awards for his work; Honored by the Medical Association of the State of Alabama; received the “News Personality of 1974” award by the Billboard Magazine; recognized for his outstanding job handling both television shows for the Florence State University (currently UNA) preview and football replay shows along with many other awards and recognitions for his outstanding community service.
For many years, he enjoyed calling football games for Stevenson High School as the “Voice of the Panthers” and the North Jackson Chiefs. He also enjoyed the camaraderie of traveling and being a part of the UNA Football program while doing the play-by-play.
One of David’s greatest joys was making music with his friends, singing and playing guitars and other instruments. He played music with many people, including strangers and other bands, including the early days when the group of Alabama was making its start as “Wild Country”.
David Williams’s biggest accomplishment was being an elder in the Church of Christ. His influence and leadership will continue to affect many even after his passing.
