Delbert Thomas Shelton's Obituary
Mr. Delbert Thomas Shelton, age 87 of Scottsboro, AL, passed away Tuesday, March 08, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family and New Beacon Hospice workers. Mr. Shelton was a Lions Club member for 55 years. During that time, he sold thousands of brooms and mops to raise money for children and senior glasses, as well as pecans to raise money to help out with the Christmas Charities. He also sold tickets for the Lions Club hot dog dinner and Bingo game. Mr. Shelton was a member of the American Legion and VFW, and was always a great supporter of our veterans. He served as a city councilman for 8 years, and always loved helping the people of Scottsboro.
Mr. Shelton is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mildred Sumner Shelton; son, Thomas Boyd Shelton (fiancé, Angela Hadzega); daughter, Deborah Shelton Knight; two grandchildren, Charles Richard Knight III and Tiffany Shelton Godfrey; two great-grandchildren, Gracelee and Catherine Godfrey; three brothers, Nolan Shelton, Julian Shelton, and James Shelton; two sisters, Mary Pearl Johnson and Loretta Hancock; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Elise and Evie Lee James Shelton; and two sisters, Pauline Wininger and Ruth Crowe.
In his later years, Mr. Shelton loved visiting with the Scottsboro Nutrition Center where he enjoyed playing Rook, Dominos, and Bingo. He also loved singing with the senior choir, The Joyful Sound, led by Les Hutson.
Visitation for Mr. Shelton is Friday, March 11, 2016 from 11 AM – 1 PM at Rudder Funeral Home in Scottsboro. The funeral service will begin at 1 PM in the chapel with Rev. Douglas Shelton officiating, and burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Condolences may be made at www.rudderfuneralhomes.com.
