Doris Ann Johnson's Obituary
Doris Ann Manning Johnson went home for spring to see the flowers of heaven on Monday morning, March 20th, 2023. She was born the oldest of eleven children in a time very different from now. When working with her parents helping with siblings, in the garden or in the fields were part of daily life. She enjoyed school and an education was very important to her. She graduated from New Hope High School in 1952 and moved to Scottsboro to begin work. Even after leaving home, she continued to help her younger siblings to succeed and do well.
Doris and her husband, James Roy, met a little later in life than most and had one daughter, Wendy. She was a caring and devoted wife and mother. Always making sure her family had what they needed; getting their daughter to every lesson, rehearsal and performance Wendy was involved in; keeping a household running smoothly; setting a Christian example, all while being a constant loving, supportive and strong presence for her family. During this time, she went back to school at Northeast Community College at night, working on and receiving an Associates Degree.
Most will best remember Doris from the Probate Judges Office in the courthouse, where she either helped you with a license plate, driver’s license or recording a deed. At more that 30 years working there, she was a staple in the building. After retiring from the Probate Office, she worked at the Council on Aging. Always helping to plan and execute events for the community. She could be found making or serving food or decorating for most events. When she retired a second time, she could not just “sit at home” and began working part time with her home Church Broad Street Church of Christ. Working at the Church gave her and opportunity to continue to help others and serve her community. A faithful Christian all her life, Doris attended BC of C regularly continuing her life of service, outreach, and faith.
From her humble beginnings, through her life of faith, family and service, Doris proved what a strong, resilient, determined and amazing woman she was. She fiercely loved her family and friends, was strong in her faith, an avid reader and lover of flowers. Life was not always easy, but it was well lived.
She is survived by her daughter, Wendy (Jesse) McNiel; her grandchildren, Thomas McNiel, Alexandra McNiel; her sisters, Edna Lee, Paulette (Charles) Goodman, Loretta (Gene) Bullard and Debra Bearden; brothers, Jack Manning, and Larry (Marsha) Manning; sisters-in-law, Linda Manning, and Donna Manning. and many nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, James Roy Johnson; her parents, Wallace, and Edna Manning; her sisters, Lila Wright and Betty Woody and her brothers, Howard Manning, and Donald Manning.
