Dorothea Fanning Grider's Obituary
Dorothea Fanning Grider, 88, of Scottsboro, died Tuesday afternoon at her residence. She was a native of New Market and was valedictorian of the New Market High School Class of 1942. Upon graduating from the Jefferson-Hillman School of Nursing (UAB) in 1946, she first worked as a registered nurse in Huntsville before moving to Scottsboro in 1948 to work at Hodges Hospital for Dr. Rayford Hodges. She later worked for Dr. Ingram Bankston and as night shift supervisor at Jackson County Hospital. At the time of her retirement, she was assistant director of nurses at Scottsboro Nursing Home.
She was a faithful member of the Randall's Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and Ellen Rudder Sunday School Class. She was a member of the "Quilters” which for many years met weekly to piece and sew quilts earning funds to support various church missions and projects. She was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and known as "Grandmother" to many. According to her grandchildren, she made the best biscuits this side of Heaven.
She is survived by a son, Ralph Grider and daughter-in-law, Dianne, of Scottsboro; daughter, Sarah Jo Musick and son-in-law, Bruce, of Gadsden; grandsons, Clayton Grider (Kristin), Brett Grider (Kristen), and Mark Musick; granddaughter, Anna Musick, and a greatgrandson, Micah Grider.
She was preceded in death by her parents, E.R. and Exie Fanning and her husband, Howard Grider.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday at the Randall's Chapel United Methodist Church, with Dr. Bill Weems and Dr. Steve Screws officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening at Rudder Funeral Home in Scottsboro from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Randall's Chapel United Methodist Church Building Fund.
