Dwight Duke 1946 ~ 2011: A life of service to Jackson County and to the State of Alabama
Nathan Dwight Duke died on May 15, 2011, at the age of 64. Born in Fayetteville, Alabama, in Talladega County on September 22, 1946, to Fannie Mae Owens and Willis Zebulon Duke who were cotton mill workers and sometime sharecroppers, his life was spent in service to the people of Jackson County and to the State of Alabama.
Duke graduated from Jacksonville State University in 1968 with a degree in Physical Education and English and Cumberland School of Law in 1975 where he received his law degree and subsequently passed the Alabama State Bar Examination. Duke served as District Attorney of Jackson County from 1978 until 1996.
The Duke family have been members of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Scottsboro, Alabama since 1994.
Dwight Duke is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jean Duke; three children: Braxton Duke of Atlanta, Georgia, Jason Duke and his wife Georgia Duke of Scottsboro, Alabama, Amanda Duke Kiep and husband Bryan Kiep of Huntsville, Alabama; four grandchildren: Ava-Marie Duke, Logan Sherman, Jonathan Kiep and Jessica Kiep; two sisters: Kaye Duke Slanker of Birmingham and Laura Duke Crook of Sylacauga.
Visitation will be held at Bradford Hall at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 402 South Scott Street, Scottsboro, Alabama on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 from 5 PM until 8 PM. Funeral services will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Scottsboro, Alabama on Wednesday, May 18, at 3 PM followed by burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Scottsboro.
Pallbearers will be comprised of his former basketball team from East Highland High School.
His colleagues, members of the Jackson County Bench and Bar will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in the name of Dwight Duke to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org). Donations may also be made in his memory to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Scottsboro, Alabama. www.rudderfuneralhomes.com.
