Gladys L'Freida Houser Matthews, 88 of Hollywood, AL, died March 11, 2015 at The Bridge in South Pittsburg, TN. Gladys was the daughter of the late Emory Jordon and Catherine Eakin Houser born March 5, 1927 in Stevenson, AL. She had worked as a twister operator in a carpet mill and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Carnes, member of the National Committee in Washington, POW and VFW.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her husband Johnie Newton Matthews; son Johnny Carl Matthews, grandson Anthony Carl Matthews; great-granddaughter Makayla Danielle Bice; sister Opal Peters; brothers: Carl Vernon Houser, E.J. Houser and Cecil Houser.
Survivors include her daughters: Jeannetta (James) Crawford, Veyonne Matthews Privett; daughter-in-law Blindell Matthews; grandchildren: Marc (Suzi) Crawford, Nena Davis, Esther Harvey, Newton (Amanda) Bice, Jamie (Robert) McIntire, Casandra (Josh) Linderman, Chad Gardner, Christi Thompson; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; brother Estell Doyle Houser; sisters: Wilma (Bill) Steele, Juanita (Paul) Brooks, Lila (Paul) Cromwell; a host on nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be Thursday, 2-9 PM CDT at Rudder Funeral Home in Stevenson, AL. The funeral service will be Friday, March 13, at 2 PM CDT at the funeral home chapel officiated by Rev. Joey Guess. Interment will be in Pinehaven Memorial Gardens in Hollywood, AL. www.rudderfuneralhomes.com.
