Helen Phyllis Carter's Obituary
Helen Duncan Carter, age 95 of Scottsboro, AL, passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2016. She was born in Hollywood, AL in 1920 to Russell S. and Lela Harris Duncan. She was the oldest of five siblings, and later married Jesse Doran “Jack” Carter.
Helen graduated from Jackson County High School and then worked for the Alabama Department of Pensions and Securities (now Dept of Human Resources) as a case manager for 44 years. She was an active member of Scottsboro First Baptist Church during her entire life, serving in the nursery for many years and assisting the missionaries when they visited the church.
She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; siblings, Hilda Phillips, Nell Broyles, Sam Duncan, Kathleen “Tootsie” Dunn; and nephew, Phillip Broyles. She is survived by nieces, Donna Broyles Gardner of Scottsboro and Susan Maples of Decatur; nephews, Sam Duncan of Tucker, GA and Scott Phillips of Clearwater, FL; as well as several other nieces, nephews, and cousins. A special thanks to her many caregivers in recent years, all of which were much appreciated.
Visitation for Ms. Carter is Sunday, September 25, 2016 from 12-2 PM, with the funeral service beginning at 2 PM at Rudder Funeral Home in Scottsboro. Interment will follow at Pinehaven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Scottsboro Senior Center, Meals on Wheels Program, 142 Rita Williams Drive, Scottsboro, AL 35768.
