October 30, 1918 ~ April 8, 2014
Stevenson, Alabama
Jessie Simpson Peters passed from this walk of life on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. Moma Jessie, as she was known to many, was 95 years old, but claimed to never be a day over 84. She was a member of Edgefield Missionary Baptist Church. Jessie was employed by Avondale Mills for nearly 45 years. She and her husband, J.B., came to Stevenson from their home in Boaz in the 1930's to work at the Stevenson Mary Ann Textile Plant. There they raised their daughter, Martha, who gave them four grandchildren ~ "the joy of her life". Jessie loved to dance and she could sew like a dream. She and lifelong pal, Marjorie Smith, joined a square dance team and enrolled in ballroom dance lessons. Jessie loved to watch The Lawrence Welk Show and managed to pass on her love for music and dancing to her family. She loved to fish with a cane pole and loved traveling on cruises with her coworker/friend Ruth Adams. Jessie loved the beach and loved the Avondale Recreation Camp Helen in Panama City Beach, Florida where many happy vacations were spent. Jessie was a member of the board of directors for the Avondale Mills/Stevenson Federal Credit Union. After Jessie's grandchildren grew up and many years after the passing of her first husband, J.B., she married Loyd Peters. She moved to the farm where she made a garden and loved canning and baking and spending time with her great grandchildren. Jessie had been a resident of North Jackson (Cumberland) Nursing Home for the past several years where she was attended by angels. She never lost her zeal for life. She was described as being sweet, but truthful; she was a tough ole bird. She loved us and we loved her.
