John J. "Johnny" Walker, 72 of Bridgeport, AL, died Sunday, May 10, 2009 in an automobile accident near his home in Bridgeport.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Anne Blevins Walker and two sons, Army Lieutenant Colonel John M. "Mike" Walker of Hawaii and U.S. Park Ranger David H. Walker of Fort Payne, AL. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law Jeanne Walker and two grandsons Matthew and Davis Walker, all of Hawaii. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and his best friend Bill "Bird Dog" Hall of Stevenson, AL.
He was preceded in death by his parents Henderson Cooper and Lucy Elizabeth Crownover Walker, brothers H.C. and Stanley Walker and sister Norma Jean Propst.
Johnny was a beloved member of the Doran's Cove Church of Christ where he served as a song leader and Sunday School Teacher. He retired in the early 1990's after working nearly thirty-five years at TVA Widow's Creek Steamplant as a railroad switchman. Prior to his tenure at TVA, he spent time working in Washington, DC for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Johnny then served for a number of years in the United States Army both on active duty and in the reserves. He spent time in Germany with the 4th Infantry Division in the years following the Korean War and attained the rank of Corporal. Johnny had a life-long love of hunting and fishing and in recent years enjoyed skeet shooting at Valley Clays Skeet Club in Stevenson. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed "cutting up" with them at every family gathering.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 14, from 5-9 PM CDT at Rudder Funeral Home in Bridgeport, AL. Funeral services will be Friday, May 15, at 11 AM CDT in the chapel at Rudder Funeral Home in Bridgeport with Mike Walker and Roger Comstock officiating. Burial will follow at the Walker Family Cemetery.
