Ms. Mabel Cox White's Obituary
Mabel Cox White, beloved wife, mother and mother-in law, grandmother and great grandmother, died Monday, October 12, 2015, at the age of 101 at Highlands Health and Rehabilitation in Scottsboro, Alabama. She was born September 18, 1914, in Jonesville, Virginia, but moved to Scottsboro in 1946 when she married Jesse Marion White. She was a 1934 graduate of Emory and Henry College in Emory, Virginia. She taught school both in Virginia and Alabama for 29 years. After retiring from fulltime teaching, she spent her retirement years serving as a school volunteer at Scottsboro Junior High. She also spent 20 years as a member of the Highlands Auxiliary. She was a lifelong Methodist, but in her later years was a faithful attendee of Scottsboro Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Norma Jean (Steve) Watkins of Decatur, Alabama, and her son, Bill (Carol) White of Scottsboro, Alabama; grandchildren: Laura (Adam) Jordan, Amanda (Stace) Tedford, Callie White and John Will White; great grandchildren: Hunter and Caitlyn Tedford and Emily Kate and Annalee Jordan; sister: Winnie Cox Elliott; sister-in-law: Virginia Cox.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Marion White; her parents, Will and Ida Cox; and her siblings, Ethel Orr, Fred Cox, and Roy Cox.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 14, 2015 from 11:00 – 1:00 at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Scottsboro, with a memorial service to follow. Officiating will be Dr. Roy Hall and Rev. Micaiah Tanck. In lieu of flowers, memorials and donations may be made to Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Scottsboro, Alabama, or The ARC of Jackson County.
The family would especially like to thank Dr. Brad Bradford, the entire staff at Highlands Health and Rehabilitation, and the 5th floor orthopedic nurses and techs at Huntsville Hospital Main for their loving and devoted care.
She was the most humble woman in the world but was our hero and our inspiration. She was the mother who sacrificed, the friend who understood; a woman of great faith, great love, and great character. She showed us every day by her example how to live our lives. She will be missed, celebrated, and remembered in the lives of everyone who knew her. She left us a notebook of instructions to follow when she died, and number 6 on the list said, “Do not grieve at my death. Think of all the good memories we’ve had during my lifetime and so many blessings God has given us.” Our greatest blessing was having her as our mother and Meme.
