Mary Ruth Combs' Obituary
Mary Ruth Combs, affectionately known by her family as “Mamaw,” age 92, of Scottsboro, AL, went home to her eternal reward on Monday, July 1st, 2019. Mary Ruth lived a long, wonderful life of selfless service to the Lord and to others, always going the extra mile and putting others before herself. She truly loved life and people.
Mary Ruth was born Mary Ruth Wright in Swearengin, AL, on June 20th, 1927. She grew up in the area and married Howard Combs on June 28th, 1947. Together they had four children and shared 51 years of love and joy together, making their home in Scottsboro. She was an active member at Broad Street Church of Christ in Scottsboro.
Mamaw loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren dearly. She enjoyed cooking all of their favorite dishes on holidays and throughout the year out of love because she was thinking of them and wanted to do something kind. While everyone had their favorite foods that Mamaw made, we could all agree on one thing: her sweet tea was the best around and no family gathering was complete without it. Mamaw made countless dishes and meals for the sick and family who had lost loved ones.
Mary Ruth, along with her husband Howard, had a green thumb and loved gardening and growing flowers. They always grew more vegetables than they knew what to do with and found joy in sharing their harvest with family and friends.
Mary Ruth was a proud member of the “Swearengin Girls” and enjoyed going to the monthly luncheon socials with ladies who were raised in the community. She had many fond memories of her time growing up and the lasting friendships she carried throughout her life with these special ladies.
Mary Ruth is survived by her daughter, Brenda Price (Bill); Son, Tom Combs; daughter Linda Cunningham (David); daughter Cheryl Ellis (Paul), nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends with whom she loved so dearly and enjoyed phone calls and visits. Mary Ruth was preceded in death by her loving husband, Howard Combs; sisters Alma Louis Wright Thomas, Alva Lois “Tiny” Wright Farr, Kathleen Wright Gillis, Nellie Joe Wright; brothers Burton Bently Wright, Arnice Cameron Wright Jr., and Waylon Loyd Wright.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 2, at Rudder Funeral Home in Scottsboro. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 11:00 am at Broad Street Church of Christ in Scottsboro, Alabama, with her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Scottsboro beside her loving husband.
Mary Ruth Combs was an inspiration to all who knew her and her legacy will live on for generations to come. The Combs family would like to thank ABC Hospice of Rainsville for their excellent care during this time.
