Nolie Louis Gilliland, 94 of Bridgeport, AL, departed this life on May 5, 2015 peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. Preceded in death by his parents Nolie L. and Linnie Drummond Gilliland; brothers: Ray and Lester Gilliland; sisters: Mae Thompson and Opal Pruitt. Nolie was a devoted husband and father and is survived by his wife of 68 years, Aileen Morris Gilliland and six children: Gary (Teresa) Gilliland, Donna (Rudder) Williams, Paul Gilliland, Phillip (Peggy) Gilliland, Jeffrey (Gail) Gilliland, Christy (Bill) Lawrence; grandfather of eleven grandchildren: Eric (Tabitha) Gilliland, Matthew (Amanda) Gilliland, Peggy (Charley) Smith, Becky (Brandon) Hubbard, Olivia (Neil) Bizzoco, Sara (Ben) Bowman, Wendy (Kyle) Fuhrman, Amber (Randy) Teeters, Andy (Misty) Gilliland, Katye Gilliland and Jodi Lawrence; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; brothers: Charles (Jackie) Gilliland, Ralph (Vashtie) Gilliland and sister Betty (Charles) Thomas. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the North Atlantic and South Pacific Oceans aboard the U.S.S. Somers (DD-381) as Chief Machinist Mate and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was retired from TVA after 35 years of service as a machinist foreman with the majority of time at Widows Creek Steam Plant. He enjoyed many happy years of retirement camping, hiking, traveling, gardening and enjoying his grandchildren. Nolie was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Bridgeport. He will forever be remembered by his loved ones as a man of God who loved his family and country. The Gilliland Family would like to extend our gratitude to the nurses of Alacare and to those who helped care for Nolie with such attentiveness and love. Visitation will be Thursday, May 7, 2-3 PM CDT at Rudder Funeral Home in Bridgeport, AL with the funeral service immediately following at 3 PM CDT in the chapel officiated by Rev. Houston Thomas.
