James Luther "Luke" Matthews, 82 of Bridgeport, AL, died February 20, 2013 at Parkridge Medical Center. Luke was the son of the late John Edward and Stella Gamble Matthews born November 23, 1930 in Rash, Alabama. He was a U. S. Army Korean War Veteran. He had worked at the U.S. Department of State in Austria and taught at Bridgeport Elementary and Middle Schools. Mr. Matthews was a member of Jackson Co. Retired Teachers Association and First United Methodist Church in Bridgeport.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Geneva Lemons, Dochie Hughes, Edna Whitfield, Bayne Matthews and Lewis Matthews.
Survivors include his siblings: Rubye Hahn, Nanna (Warren) Whitcher all of Bridgeport, AL, Louise Bennett of MI, Don (Cathy) Matthews of Chattanooga, TN; nieces and nephews: Alicia (Mark) Warren, Mitzi (Brian) Guess, Greg Whitcher, Jeff Matthews, Donna (Jeff) Mullins, Drake and Luke Guess and other relatives.
Visitation will be Thursday, 3-8 PM CT at Rudder Funeral Home in Bridgeport, AL. The Graveside Service will be Friday, February 22, at 11 AM at the Longacre Cemetery in Stevenson, AL officiated by Bro. Brian Guess.
